2 Lisbon Housing Lisbon has a wide variety of accommodation to suit all incomers' tastes. That's why before you start looking for the perfect room, you must decide where, how and with who you wanna live.

options...

 SHARED APARTMENT

STUDENT DORM

STUDIO APARTMENT

HOMESTAY

The most common option among Erasmus students is renting a room in a shared apartment with other international students or Portuguese locals. Besides that, you can also choose to live in one of the student residencies/dorms in Lisbon (application through your university early enough before the beginning of the semester),  you can  live alone in a studio apartment or with a Portuguese family (homestay).  Every option is different and the expenses vary depending on the conditions and location. The price for a room in a shared apartment ranges between 200-500€ per month depending on the area, conditions and amount of roommates. The bills like water, electricity and gas tend to vary between 30-50€ a month per person, but in many flats they are already included in rent.

Now you can start searching...

3

Wait a minute! Before you start, you must answer yourself following questions: ❋ Where is located your university/workplace? Is it far from the city center? ❋ Do you prefer to live alone, with international students or with Portuguese family? ❋ What is your accommodation budget? ❋ Do you mind living far from the bus stop/metro station? ❋ What is more important to you: living close to the university/work or to downtown? ❋ Would you mind living in a room without a window? ❋ How do you bear noise? ❋ Do you plan to bring your animal with you? ❋ Do you want your room to be fully furnished? ❋ What are your expectations about conditions and neighborhood?

4

Wanna house hunt by yourself? Remember to ask these questions!

❋What's the rent and what's included? (internet, bills, cleaning etc.) ❋Do I have to pay a deposit and how do I get it back? ❋How do I make my monthly payments? ❋The rooms are empty or furnished? Is there natural light available in my room? ❋Are the bed linens, sheets and blankets provided?  ❋Is the kitchen and bathroom fully furnished? Which appliances are available?

❋Is the flat warm or cold? How about humidity? Are the heaters provided for the winter? ❋Is the apartment well connected? ❋How is the neighborhood? (safe/noisy/quiet) ❋Do I rent through agency or private landlord? ❋Can I sign a contract with landlord? ❋Is there any agency service commission? ❋Is there a code of conduct in the building? ❋Is there any apartment damage checklist? ❋Are there any visiting hours or fee for guests staying/sleeping? ❋What's the fee for leaving mid-contract?

The question of neighborhood is very important since the Lisbon city center districts such as Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré or Santos tend to be very noisy.

What you have to learn about accommodation in Lisbon

5

CONTRACT: Unfortunately, in Portugal it's very rare to find a room with a contract. You need to be aware of it and sadly, there is nothing you can do. Why? Portugal currently is in a quite hard stage of a crisis which makes people try to avoid high taxes. In effect, it's quite common to rent rooms without any rightful, legally binding contracts. You can ask your landlord after arrival to prepare a simple document confirming your stay, though it won't be anything binding. We understand that this could be new and a bit weird for you, but coming here to live and study means you you'll have to accept and adjust to this Portuguese reality in every area of life.   ROOM RESERVATION: In order to book your room it's common here to be asked to send the money transfer in advance, which means before the arrival. This is the way landlords secure their interest to finalize a room booking by potential tenants. Usually it's one rent as a returnable deposit increased by a cost-of-service (charged by a broker company).   BROKER COMPANIES: In Lisbon 90% of landlords don't deal with renting their property directly. This might be a bit unusual for you, however it's completely normal. How is it organized? Since usually they can't speak English, they delegate tenant searching to external companies which deal with all procedures regarding a room rental (searching and showing the rooms, presenting offers, taking pictures, online promoting, contacting clients, etc.)

Are you ready to start

Of course not. We know that you know nothing, yet :-) But worry no more! We live in Lisbon quite long so you can trust us and ask for help! Decide NOW if you wanna look for accommodation by yourself (which probably is very stressful if you can't speak Portuguese language), or request the brokering service of external company that will do it for you while you're sitting peacefully on your sofa :-)

Sounds good? To make the housing hunt easier for you, we created the “Housing Request” form which is a service aimed to help you in finding your new home in Lisbon that suits your needs and expectations!

Upon Arrival

How to get home from the airport? Very comfortable way and popular among students is to book Erasmus Transfer which will bring you directly home. Although, some of you will probably choose a traditional TAXI, but please BE CAREFUL and always ask a driver to turn on the taximeter (you shouldn't pay more than 15-20€ to get to the city center and unfortunately they tend to deceive arriving tourists or students). One more thing - at the airport is always a lot of people waiting for a taxi so you need too take into account quite long waiting time.

If you don't want to use any of these services, you can get to your place by Lisbon Metro. It's the cheapest option but the longest in time (most of you will have to change the metro line). To get your ticket you'll have to first buy a temporary transportation card and charge it with a single ticket for 1,45€, or with zapping (stored amount). In the second case you'll pay only 1,30€ for the journey, but the line to buy a ticket is comparable with this for a taxi... Once you arrive, come to our T.I.A.B. Office to receive more information about the Lisbon Public Transport and to get a FREE form to apply for a Monthly Pass valid for metro, buses, trams and trains inside the Urban Zone (7€ - cost of the plastic card; 36,20€ - monthly ticket price).

Feeling lost upon arrival? Visit our Office and get all help you need!
